Manual Handling Instructor - QQI (formerly FETAC) Level 6

Five Day Training Course 



Manual handling accounts for over one-third of all reported accidents in Ireland. Most accidents result in back injury, though the hands, arms and feet may also be injured. Specific legislation, namely Part 2, Chapter 4, of the General Application Regulations 2007, requires employers to designate a competent employee or engage a competent person to assist them in providing effective manual handling training to its staff. 

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this training course, delegates should be able to:


  • Carry out a range of manual handling techniques and apply these to a range of manual handling tasks
  • Carry out risk assessments for manual handling tasks, pushing or pulling and repetitive tasks
  • Analyse a delegate's performance of manual handling techniques
  • Give effective instruction in practical manual handling techniques
  • Deliver effective presentations


Upon completion, participants will be provided with a training pack including a complete manual handling operative training course on CD-ROM, which can be utilised as a template for delivery of their training within their own organisations. 

Who Should Attend


This course is aimed at those who wish to become Manual Handling Instructors (Operative level).


  • Participants who wish to attend the course should seek medical advice if they suffer from any medical condition, which may be exacerbated by physical exertion
  • Light comfortable clothing should be worn to allow participation in the practical elements of the course. 

Course Programme - Total Contact hours = 35 Hrs Workshop + 65 Hrs Assessment

Course Accreditation/Assessment


This course is QQI (formerly FETAC) accredited at Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications. The course meets the requirements of QQI Specific Purpose Specification 6S0242, a QQI Special Purpose Award. Delegates who successfully complete the course and pass all parts of the assessment will receive QQI certification. 


Those delegates wishing to pursue QQI certification will be required to:

  • Complete a Practical Examination
  • Complete a Written Examination
  • Complete a Post Course Assignment.  This final Assignment is due back to SQT 3 weeks after course completion.

The grading of the QQI award is as follows:

Pass               50-64%

Merit               65-79%

Distinction     80-100%
