Occupational First Aid - FETAC Level 5

Three Day Training Course 

Background

 

The Occupational First Aid Regulations were published in 1993. These regulations imposed a mandatory requirement on all employers to have a specified minimum number of Occupational First Aiders trained and deployed in the workplace.

 

Trained occupational First Aiders who have undergone the three-day course, provide a life saving link between the time of incident to the arrival of the emergency services or appropriate medical assistance.  Our Occupational First Aid Course is provided by a recognised Occupational First Aid Instructor. 

Learning Outcomes

 

On successful completion of this training course, delegates should be able to:

 

  • Understand the responsibilities of the occupational first aider
  • Provide treatment for the purpose of preserving life or minimising the consequences of injury until discharge or the arrival of medical assistance.
  • Provide treatment in the workplace for an injury which does not require the attention of a medical practitioner or nurse.
  • Be capable of coordinating first aid arrangements in the workplace.
  • Be familiar with health and safety legislation on first aid provision in the workplace.
  • Be capable of performing CPR and using an AED
  • Be capable of recognising and treating heart disease as a First Aider 

Who Should Attend

 

  • Any person involved in the area of Health and Safety in the organisation
  • Supervisors or team leaders
  • Staff on shift work to give the organisation 24 hour First Aid cover.
  • Employees who have previously completed an Occupation First Aid Course should complete a Refresher course (1-day) within the lifetime of their current certificate.
  • There is in actual fact no reason why any employee should not undergo this training.

 

Max Class size is 10 people. 

Course Programme: Total Contact hours = 24 Hrs Workshop (including Assessment)

 

Unit 1 First aid in the workplace

Unit 2 Patient assessment

Unit 3 Respiratory emergencies

Unit 4 Cardiac first response; Includes Automatic External Defibrillator(AED) training

Unit 5 Wounds and bleeding

Unit 6 Altered levels of consciousness

Unit 7 Musculoskeletal injuries

Unit 8 Burns and scalds, chemicals, electric shock

 

Participants are evaluated on the final day by an external examiner. 

Course Accreditation/Assessment

 

FETAC

This course is FETAC accredited at Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications. The course meets the requirements of FETAC Component Specification D20188, a FETAC Minor Award. Delegates who successfully complete the course and pass all parts of the assessment will receive FETAC certification.  

 

Those delegates wishing to pursue FETAC certification will be required to:

  • Demonstrate Basic Life Saving Skills 40% (30 mins)
  • Be assessed on other Occupational First Aid Skills 30% (throughout the course)
  • Complete a Written Exam 30% (45 mins)

 

Assessment is carried our by an External Occupational First Aid Assessor.

The grading of the FETAC award is as follows:

Pass               50-64%

Merit               65-79%

Distinction     80-100%

 

OFAAA (Occupational First Aid Assessment Agent)

On successful completion of FETAC certification, an OFAAA Certificate will be issued.  This is valid for 2 years.

Refresher Training

 

A one day Occupational First Aid Refresher course must be completed at any time during the two year lifetime of the certificate in order to maintain their OFAAA cert.

 

This course is available exclusively on an In-House basis.
