Background
Each year in Ireland 5,000 people die from Cardiac Arrest. The Irish Heart Foundation / American Heart Foundation design CPR courses as part of a programme to decrease deaths. The AHA / IHF designed the Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers to prepare a wide variety of healthcare professionals to recognise life-threatening emergencies and to provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.
The course includes adult, child, infant rescue skills in both the out-of-hospital and in- hospital emergencies.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this training course, delegates should be able to:
- Give CPR to an adult and child and infant. Show how to help a choking victim. Use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator)
- Describe the Chain of Survival
- Describe the signs of 4 common life – threatening emergencies in adults – Cardiac Arrest, Choking, Stroke, Heart Attack
- Activate the emergency services
- Give CPR on Adult, Child, Infant, using a barrier device
- Perform 1 and 2 rescuer CPR
- Use an AED
- Relieve choking in the responsive and unresponsive victim of any age.

Who Should Attend
All Healthcare professionals i.e. Nursing and Medical Staff, should complete a Healthcare Provider Course which is 6-7 hours long. This is currently the standard in place in all Hospitals in Ireland.
The max class size is limited to 6 people. Larger groups can be catered for with additional instructors

Course Programme
This course covers CPR and AED. It is a hands’ on course using manikin practice and DVD. This watch-then-practise method of teaching has been proven to improve skills and knowledge retention.
At end of course formal skills assessment takes place.

Course Accreditation/Assessment
This course is accredited by the Irish Heart Foundation.
Healthcare Provider students must pass Skills Tests by successfully demonstrating competency in these skills. They must also complete a Multiple Choice Questionnaire test and achieve the pass rate of 84%.
Delegates who successfully complete the course and pass the skills assessment and questionnaire will receive an Irish Heart Foundation “Healthcare Provider Card” which is valid for two years.
